If you’ve been thinking about renovating your existing interior vibe, style, and/or items, going to an interior design show should be an integral part of your process.
Sure, seeing stunning interior images on Instagram and Pinterest can be a sweet treat for your eyes. But, visiting an interior design show and seeing, touching, and feeling the quality of items yourself is an entirely different experience—it’s always more satisfying in our opinion.
And we’ve got good news—if you’re a local Torontonian, you can join me at IDS Toronto on January 20 and 21, 2024!
Where do we come in? We’re so glad you asked. Working with DE5IGN STUDIO (that’s us!) will give you the benefits of visiting an interior design show, plus key things to keep in mind before you go.
If you’re new to our website, here’s a brief intro to DE5IGN STUDIO. It was founded in 2016 by Karolina Adamska. After renovating her own home from top to bottom (down to the brick!), she adopted a love and understanding for the architecture and construction of century homes in her neighbourhood in the east end of Toronto.
Don’t Skip the Design Show
We totally get the hesitation—going to an interior design show can be overwhelming and time-consuming. You’ll be walking a lot all day to see different furnishings, lighting fixtures, appliances, hardware, and materials options. With the chance that may not find the special things you’re looking for.
Nevertheless, we firmly believe that most things are best purchased after seeing them IRL. From plumbing fixtures to natural stone for your kitchen countertop, physically exploring and getting up close in an interior design showroom is better than ordering online. We said what we said!
Shopping online is by no means difficult, but it can come at a cost. When you buy online, you may not always get what you expect. And, unfortunately, it can sometimes arrive ruined if it isn’t packaged or shipped correctly.
Why You Should Attend an Interior Design Show
Now that we’ve sorted all of that out, let’s get into the 4 main reasons why you should go to an interior design show before renovating and remodelling your home.
1: Get the Full In-Person Experience
A good design is one that positively influences one or more of the five senses; mainly touch, sight, hearing, and smell. At an interior design show, you get a full-on in-person sensory experience. It’s quite powerful!
What is the texture and finish of a material?
How would it appear under different lighting conditions?
Would the colour work well with the other items in a particular room?
Some designs and materials tend to look different when you’re viewing them on your laptop, phone screen, in a catalogue, or completely different lighting. Photography captures images from an angle that sometimes gives you an illusion of perfection. And viewing images on a website more often than not can differ from what they really look like—because of editing or image quality.
You get a clearer picture when you visit an interior design show. The aesthetics of a piece are something to be experienced in person instead of looking online or in a catalogue. There’s simply no substitute for running your fingers on a soft velvet couch.
2: Feel Inspired
An interior design show is a great way to get inspiration for your home. Online resources can help lay down the foundation of your design goals, but visiting an interior design showroom can confirm your strategy or make you rethink it.
Going to a design showroom will help bring a new perspective when deciding on the style, colours, and designs that are most suitable for your space. It may even inspire you to experiment with new designs and discover something you would have never seen before, which can really elevate your home.
Being open to having conversations with vendors and speaking to other attendees can bring such an interactive element to your design experience. Even if you don’t find items that fit your space, you’ll leave feeling excited about getting started and with fresh ideas on how to accomplish your design goals.
3: Discover New Products
Another benefit of visiting an interior design show is that you get to discover new products, brands, and technology that you may have never heard of or seen before. Spending time at a trade show will open you up to the latest trends, ideas, and styles that currently interior design features.
Some classic trends are here to stay, while others might not last as long. But that shouldn’t stop you from incorporating designs that you love into your home. And, if you ever need a professional opinion on what to add or what to cut from your list, we’ve got you covered.
4: Compare Prices
One of the main benefits of visiting an interior design show is that it will help you make smart purchases. And who doesn’t love that!?
The staff at a show are incredible at letting you know about any special discounts or pricing that’s available. At the showroom, you can compare prices side-by-side and get an estimate of how much each interior style can cost you. Although it sometimes isn’t exact, it will definitely help you simplify and plan your budget.
